Hierbij ligt de nadruk op de organisatie van de beschaving en menselijke activiteit op een zodanige manier dat biodiversiteit en natuurlijke ecosystemen behouden blijven, terwijl men toch probeert te voldoen aan de noden van de huidige maatschappij en deze idealen tracht te plannen op lange termijn. Duurzaamheid is dus gericht op lange termijn denken en heeft effect op alle lagen van de maatschappij: binnen organisaties, op vlak van lokale buurtinitiatieven en op de hele planeet.
Duurzaamheid betreft in dit bredere perspectief een positief concept waarin getracht word om welzijn te bereiken voor zowel de mensheid als voor de ecosystemen op onze aarde.
